What is Mushroom Compost?
Mushroom compost (spent mushroom substrate) is a nutrient-rich soil conditioner made from composted straw and manure that has been steam sterilised after mushroom growing. It improves soil structure, increases organic matter, and enhances moisture retention.
Best For: clay soil improvement, mulching beds, vegetable gardens (especially brassicas), and general soil conditioning.
Not Suitable For: seed sowing, potting mixes, ericaceous (acid-loving) plants, or use as a standalone growing medium.
- Available in 750L bulk bags, 1200L jumbo bags and pallets of 75L bags (10–40 bags per pallet)
- Next working day delivery available when ordered before 12:30pm (Mon–Fri)
Why Choose Our Mushroom Compost?
- ✔ Steam sterilised (helps ensure it’s free from weeds and spores)
- ✔ Adds humus + organic matter for healthier soil
- ✔ Helps break up heavy clay and improve drainage
- ✔ Improves moisture retention in light sandy soils
- ✔ Encourages strong root development
- ✔ Excellent value soil conditioner for larger gardens
Best Uses
- Mulching: a thick layer helps suppress weeds, lock in moisture and improve soil over time
- Soil conditioning: dig in to improve structure and fertility
- Vegetable gardens: particularly good for brassicas (cabbage, sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli)
- Tree & shrub planting: improves moisture and nutrient availability around roots
Important: When Not To Use It
Mushroom compost is a rich soil conditioner and is best used mixed with soil or as a mulch layer. It is not recommended as a direct growing medium for potting, seed starting, young plants or delicate acid-loving plants.

Mushroom Compost vs Garden Compost – What’s the Difference?
Mushroom Compost is primarily a soil conditioner and mulch. It improves soil structure and organic matter but is not designed as a standalone growing medium.
Garden Compost is more balanced for planting and container use.
If you're improving heavy soil or mulching large areas, mushroom compost is often the better-value option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is mushroom compost good for vegetable gardens?
Yes. It is particularly beneficial for brassicas such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower due to its nutrient profile and neutral pH.
Does mushroom compost contain weeds?
No. It is steam sterilised after mushroom production to help eliminate weeds and spores.
Can mushroom compost be used for pots?
No. It is too rich to use as a direct growing medium and should be mixed into soil or used as a mulch.
What pH is mushroom compost?
Typically between pH 6.5–7, making it close to neutral.
